DIGS003 | MAD WORLD

Mad World is a product of COVID 19. I would almost say it’s a sneak peek into my mind during this time.

Mad World ultimately began as a response to Picasso’s Guernica, but instead of a visual narrative in the act of war, I’ve responded with an internal battle, a war on the self. Mad World has a dynamic conflict of emotions, from death, destruction to transformation, and the notion that life will continue.

As all mural’s in The Digs Collection are inspired and named after a song, in this case it’s Tears for Fears classic Mad World. Please note I’m also heavily drawn to the version that features in Donnie Darko, directed by Richard Kelly, performed by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews. Like the music the film also had a profound effect on me, it’s imaginative and thought provoking. I like things that have a polarity of light and darkness.

I don’t just create wallpaper at The Digs Collection, for example Mad World is philosophical world with many polarising view points.

Mad World

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world, mad world

Spectre has a subtle texture which brings dimension to the print.

OPTION 2

DIGS003_MAD WORLD | BLACK + BLACK | BLACK MYLAR

This is super hard to photograph and scan due the black gloss ground. The illustrations are in a slight metallic black ink. This option is incredible in person. Subtle and mysterious.

NOT JUST A PRINTY FACE!

Behind the Scene Video Teaser

The above video is an important part of my process, it’s where I print and install the artwork. It’s a step to check the design before the file goes to the printer for sampling. The scale of the artwork in the video is 90% of the final size. Sorry about the dance moves in advance!

Design Facts

DIGS003_MAD WORLD is made up of 140 drawings approximately 2000 physical hours of vector drawing. My method is to re-draw hand drawings. This can take 8 - 12 per drawing.

Design Facts

Mad World’s composition features a collective of 1000 hours of illustrations. I reworks my hand-drawings into unique painstakingly drawn vector-art.

A detailing reference to Picasso Guernica, is the downward markings. In Guernica, the marks are a projection of newsprint. In 1937, news of Guernica’s bombing was reported with fewer media outlets than today. However, Mad World is made at a time where news is over-saturated, legitimacy is questionable, hence the markings in this artwork are freehand with no reference.

Mad World (Rampage) 2020

Black & White

Rampage, for Cryptograph, is a unique work. Its’ contextual story intertwines with Mad World for The Digs Collection. The Rampage composition features a collective of 64 illustrations and 500 hours of drawing. Digitally created as 300dpi tif file, 841 x 1189mm. Originating as a digital file is important detail, it gives the winning bidder an option to print the minted artwork to scale, or larger.

The artwork was conceived within the first 8 weeks of COVID. It was a time of uncertainty. I found the news overwhelming and sensationalised. To be informed with daily changes I would chime in to Mayor Garcetti, his comforting words.

As a resident alien in the USA under my O1 Artist Visa, I’m unable to claim for most financial assistance, it cancels the terms of my visa. Catch 22 for me! Especially as all my clients suddenly hit the breaks on projects and commissions. It was an exceptionally hard time. I mean who invests in art right now? I found it demorsalizing and my American dream was fading. However, I found solace in Mayor Garcetti’s effort to assist the homeless and the non documented workers exceptional. It’s very heartwarming to see someone speak up for this often-overlooked demographic. For me, it put things into perspective, I’m more than ok, I have art and I will make something magical with this portal of endless time, Rampage is an example of that.

Who This Cryptograph Supports | ANGELENO FUND

Cryptograph supports great causes. Each artist nominate a charitable cause. Inspired by Garcetti’s efforts to assist the non documented I have chosen to support The Angeleno Fund.

In mid-April, the USA federal economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic would exclude whole categories of immigrants and their families, The Angeleno Fund looks at way to help this group of residents. The Angeleno Card provides direct financial assistance to Angelenos facing extreme economic hardship as a direct result of the COVID-19 crisis. About Cryptograph or how I understand it!

Cryptographs are a digital artwork on the blockchain, once minted these are known as Non-Fungible Tokens NFTs. Therefore the artworks exists as NFT. The blockchain technology is hack proof and its individual token certifies/secures unique identity. The NFT also is proof of ownership, only one person can own it and its trackable on the blockchain in a publicly verifiable ledger. Genius, no more Heist Movies in the future!

Physical artworks can be digitised, but the physical is destroyed so that the cryptograph is now the original in existence. Some of the other Cryptograph creators have drawn directly onto a tablet. As I already work in the digital realm I wanted to create a digital legacy with a high quality piece. I worked at scale in photoshop and delete the file once the artwork as minted. My objective is to give the winning bidder an option to have NFT both in a virtual gallery and live simultaneously in their home as a high resolution print.

I’m super excited to be involved in this technological advancement. Rampage auctions 11th September 2020 and bids are made in the cryptocurrency Ethereum.

Testing the print before shredding, and a quick photoshoot.

Part 5, Behind the Scene of the Mad World artwork series, The Digs Collection. In this video, I chat on camera about the artwork, Cryptograph, and why I chose Mayor Garcetti Angeleno Fund as my charity for the Cryptograph auction.

This was my first on camera video so I'm a little awkward. We all have to start somewhere!

Part 6, Behind the Scene of the Mad World artwork series, The Digs Collection. In this video, I take down the artwork I've temporarily installed with gaffer tape to shred in the shredder. This eliminates all evidence Rampage exists in real life.
